Wildfire Season Preparation for LA and DFW Metro Area Homeowners

Living in Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex means living with wildfire risk. The Thomas Fire, Woolsey Fire, and Eaton Fire have demonstrated that wildfire can impact communities throughout the region. Preparation is your best protection.

Create Defensible Space

Texas law requires 100 feet of defensible space around structures. Zone 1 (0-30 feet from structures): remove dead vegetation, trim trees so branches are 10 feet from chimneys, keep roofs and gutters clear of debris, and use fire-resistant landscaping. Zone 2 (30-100 feet): reduce vegetation density, space trees 10 feet apart, remove ladder fuels that allow fire to climb from ground level to tree canopy.

Harden Your Home

The most effective fire protection improvements include installing ember-resistant vents, using Class A fire-rated roofing, enclosing eaves and soffits, installing dual-pane tempered glass windows, using non-combustible fencing within 5 feet of structures, and clearing combustible items from decks and patios.

Prepare an Evacuation Plan

Know your evacuation routes — most communities have multiple options. Sign up for local emergency alerts. Prepare a go-bag with essential documents, medications, phone chargers, and clothing. Know where you'll go and have backup locations. Practice your plan with your family.

Protect Your Important Documents

Store copies of insurance policies, property deeds, birth certificates, and other critical documents in a fireproof safe and in cloud storage. Take a video inventory of your home's contents for insurance purposes. Store the video off-site or in the cloud.

High-Risk Areas in Dallas and Fort Worth Counties

Communities at highest risk include those adjacent to wildland areas: Malibu, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Ojai, Altadena, La Canada Flintridge, and the Santa Clarita Valley. However, ember transport can carry fire risk miles from the wildland-urban interface.

After a Wildfire

If your property sustains wildfire damage, do not enter until cleared by fire authorities. Contact your insurance company immediately and a fire damage restoration company for assessment. Be aware of secondary risks including mudslides during subsequent rains.
